About the Center for Industrial Heritage

of the University of Rijeka

The Centre for Industrial Heritage is a constituent of the University of Rijeka that implements programs in the field of science and research and conducts activities of topmost expertise, by executing projects in the domain of cultural heritage.

The Centre was founded in 2013 with a view to carrying out promotional projects, studying and protecting industrial and other heritage. Its additional objective is the seeking of international cooperation, more precisely, cooperation with economic and administrative bodies for the sake of preservation, conservation and purposeful exploitation of industrial and other heritage.

With regard to the organisation of the University of Rijeka, as well as the economic potential of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar and surrounding counties, special emphasis in the Centre’s activities is placed on cultural tourism and the exploitation and protection of historical and artistic heritage.

The core objective of the Centre is valorisation and appropriate presentation of cultural heritage in an interactive, innovative and multimedia-based way. Essentially, it covers several segments of action, among which scientific-research, education and tourism work are particularly emphasized. The Centre also serves as a contact point for the membership of the University in the European Culture Tourism Network.

  • providing training schemes for tourist guides, workers in tourist industry, accompanying staff and other interested parties
  • organization of workshops for all age groups
  • providing support in the execution of university programs
  • systematic research and documentation of industrial heritage
  • establishing of dialogues with institutions crucial for protection of industrial heritage
  • designing of projects within the national and international systems of industrial heritage protection
  • organization of forums, debates and conferences relating to topics of industrial archaeology and cultural assets
  • exploring the models of potential exploitation of industrial heritage for tourism purposes and submitting proposals for its revitalization and reuse
  • connecting with international partners
  • providing support for organization of conferences, symposia and accompanying cultural events
  • cross-sectoral cooperation
  • working on studies and strategies related to cultural assets
  • promoting of cultural heritage

Center for Industrial Heritage team

Prof. dr. sc. Julija Lozzi Barković

Julija Lozzi Barković, PhD, the head of the Centre for Industrial Heritage, has many years of experience in research and work related to industrial heritage.
She teaches several courses at the Department of Art History of the Rijeka Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences: the 19th Century Art, the 20th Century Art, Art Today, Final Thesis Preparation, Museology and Museum Education. She also holds an elective course in graduate study program Architectural Industrial Heritage. Julija Lozzi Barković is an active member of Pro Torpedo, the association that engages in preservation of Rijeka’s industrial heritage.

Kristina Pandža

mag. educ. hist. et inf.

Kristina Pandža, mag. educ. hist. et inf., an expert associate at the Centre for Industrial Heritage, and works as a research coordinator in project Tourism Valorisation of the Representative Monuments of Rijeka’s Industrial Heritage. Pandža is also the leader of the project’s research team creating education materials for children and adolescents.
Kristina Pandža is involved in projects aimed at professional research of industrial and cultural heritage and projects of digitalization of the researched material. These are: “Don’t Stray – Ask for the Way!” (a web database of cultural heritage of the town of Krk (http://www.history.grad-krk.hr/en)), “Rijeka Heritage 1 & 2“ (a web database of the industrial heritage of Rijeka (https://rijekaheritage.org/)) and a project of creating a map of cultural heritage of the island of Krk (http://www.visitkrk.hr/en/home/). In addition to that, Panžda works a coordinator in Interreg Europe’s project CHRISTA (Culture and Heritage for Responsible, Innovative and Sustainable Tourism Actions). Concentrating on educational activities, Kristina Pandža also gives guided tours along the sites of Rijeka’s industrial heritage.

Ivana Golob Mihić

mag. educ. inf. et hist. art.

Ivana Golob Mihić, mag. educ. inf. et hist. art., is an expert associate at the Centre for Industrial Heritage. She has been working at the Centre since its foundation in 2013, running and coordinating the projects of digitalization, in which she also takes part as a researcher. These are: “Don’t Stray – Ask for the Way!“ (a web database of cultural heritage of the town of Krk (http://www.history.grad-krk.hr/en)), “Rijeka Heritage 1 & 2” (a web database of the industrial heritage of Rijeka (https://rijekaheritage.org/)) and a project of creating an interactive map of cultural heritage of the island of Krk (http://www.visitkrk.hr/en/home/). As a researcher and expert for industrial heritage, she participates in Interreg Europe’s project CHRISTA (Culture and Heritage for Responsible, Innovative and Sustainable Tourism Actions), where she advises the project partners about the topics of industrial heritage in the service of cultural tourism. In her work, Golob Mihić focuses on the use of modern technology and multimedia in presentations of cultural and industrial heritage. She also gives guided tours along Rijeka’s industrial sites. One of her specialties is working with children and youth, where she regularly advances her skills.

Ema Makarun

mag. educ. hist. et hist. art.

Ema Makarun, mag. educ. hist. et hist. art., is an expert associate working at the Centre for Industrial Heritage since its establishment. She is a researcher in the following projects “Don’t Stray – Ask for the Way!“ (a web database of cultural heritage of the town of Krk (http://www.history.grad-krk.hr/en)); “Rijeka Heritage 1 & 2“ (a web database of the industrial heritage of Rijeka (https://rijekaheritage.org/)), and a project of creating an interactive map of cultural heritage of the island of Krk (http://www.visitkrk.hr/en/home/).
Makarun also takes part in Interreg Europe’s project CHRISTA (Culture and Heritage for Responsible, Innovative and Sustainable Tourism Actions), providing the project partners with advice on the topics of Rijeka’s industrial heritage in the service of cultural tourism. She also participates in other activities of the Centre, with a special emphasis on the activities related to research, education and tourism.
